Old Fashioned(s)

Time: ~ 5 minutes
Yield: ~ 1 cocktail
The Old Fashioned has been my drink of choice for a while now. It's a classic.

Below is the base recipe I use, but feel free to make it your own. See the notes below for ideas.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon or rye
  • 0.25 oz simple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 dashes orange bitters

Equipment

  • 1 glass
  • something to stir with

Steps

  1. Add everything to a rocks glass. Some will advise the order matters but it really doesn't.
  2. Stir a little.
  3. Add ice. Preferably a giant ice sphere or cube. Regular ice is fine but it will dilute the drink quicker.
  4. Stir a little.
  5. Express the oils of an orange peel over the glass and maybe around the rim. Garnish with expressed orange peel.
  6. Cheers!

Thanksgiving Old Fashioned

  1. Use Herb Simple Syrup
  2. Use cranberry butters instead of orange and Angostura.
  3. Use Wild Turkey 101 bourbon or rye. TURKEY PUN!

Batched Old Fashioned

You can batch any of these variations if you're taking it to a party and don't want to make drinks all evening. Below will make a batch of about 16 cocktails.
  1. Add the following to a pitcher or empty liquor bottle or whatever you want...
    • 2 cups bourbon or rye
    • 0.5 cup simple syrup
    • 32 dashes of bitters
    • 0.5 cup water
  2. Shake gently a little to mix.
  3. Pour over ice to enjoy.

Notes

  • If you want it sweeter, use up to 0.5 oz simple syrup.
  • You could use all Angostura bitters if you don't have orange bitters.
  • Use up to 2.5 oz bourbon if you're trying to go hard.
  • Don't have simple syrup and don't want to make it (even though it's super easy)? Use maple syrup instead. Or use 1 tsp of any type of sugar you have. Just be sure the sugar dissolves. You may need to stir it in a little bit of water before adding the bourbon.
